Leadership and Learning in Organizations capstone project
This capstone project investigates the compelling work of Saul’s Light Foundation. This New Orleans-based organization is committed to helping families as they traverse the myriad of experiences in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). The organization was founded by Aaron and Kimberly Novod after the heartbreaking loss of their premature infant. Saul’s Light Foundation offers a range of services in the form of financial assistance, educational resources, social-emotional support, and advocacy. The purpose of the study is to understand the effectiveness of the foundation’s support programs. The effectiveness is grounded in the emotional well-being and sense of community among NICU and bereaved families. An important component of this capstone is understanding how cultural sensitivity and anti-racist care can have an impact on improving infant and maternal outcomes to mitigate known disparities. The author of this capstone has a personal connection to this study as a Black woman who lost her son to prematurity in the NICU. The project highlights the necessity of storytelling, representation, and creating an environment where Black mothers can feel heard, understood, and protected. Insights are gathered from the detailed interviews with mothers who have received support from the foundation along with the staff and licensed clinical social workers who provide services to families. The findings and recommendations of this project aim to illuminate the strengths and possible areas for improvement in Saul’s Light Foundation’s support programs. Additionally, it emphasizes the immediate need for more effective, compassionate, and inclusive support programs for Black mothers as they traverse the challenges of the NICU and the possible sorrow of infant loss.
