Abstract
This project will begin by presenting research about the effectiveness of using children's literature in science instruction. This research will be used to develop a unit plan for 6th grade earth and space science which integrates literature into the science curriculum, while following the topics and concepts outlined in the Tennessee State Standards. A selection of lesson plans from the unit will be presented to demonstrate the incorporation of literature. These lesson plans will also demonstrate the application of reflection concerning learners and learning, the learning environment, curriculum and instructional strategies, and assessment.
This project will address learners and learning by providing literature as a means to engage students and enhance inquiry science. Science fiction, informational texts, and mythology selections will be used to stimulate inquiry, to activate background knowledge, to help students build connections to the material, and to broaden understanding of concepts. The learning environment will promote science literacy through the use of science reading centers and additions to the class library through a suggested list of supplemental books. The grouping of students and provision of opportunities for creative response and student choice will also be considered. Curriculum and instructional strategies will include read-alouds, silent reading, discussion, and other literature processes. Assessment will include teacher observations, creative projects, research assignments, and presentations. Through the consideration of the research and applications presented in this project, teachers can consider how literature can promote student learning in science and explore various means of integrating literature into the science curriculum.
