Virtual Reality Immersion Mindfulness Technology

Abstract

PURPOSE: This project purpose is to assess among nursing informatics the dimensions of user acceptance and engagement, and to analyze the impact of integrating virtual reality (VR) technology. METHODS: The study applies the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to evaluate user acceptance, engagement, and the impact of technology integration in a biomedical informatics department. The sample comprises four Registered Nurse Informaticists working within a Biomedical Informatics Research Center. Data collection methods include rating participants' prevailing mood through a virtual reality-guided exercise, deliberate engagement, and administering a TAM questionnaire. For data analysis, semi-structured interviews and TAM surveys are employed. Data is gathered using REDCap, ensuring regulation-compliant collection and securely stored on a password-protected computer. This multi-faceted approach aims to provide comprehensive insights into the informaticists' interaction with and acceptance of integrated technology. RESULTS: The project commenced with four participants; however, one individual was excluded following a new diagnosis of seizures, underscoring the necessity of prioritizing health and safety during the design and testing phases. Another participant faced difficulties achieving proper functionality with the Oculus device, potentially pointing to issues related to device setup, user guidance, or technical support and another was unable to log in to the device, this participant did not complete the questionnaire. Additionally, one participant reported experiencing nausea within minutes of use, indicating potential challenges in the system's comfort or motion-handling capabilities. Some participants also struggled to reorient themselves to the controllers after releasing them, suggesting a need for system design improvements to accommodate users’ spatial awareness and control. Of the two remaining participants, both completed the RedCap survey, with responses showing that 50% would use the technology to enhance job effectiveness, while the other 50% remained uncertain. The small sample size, reduced to two participants, limits the generalizability of the findings and complicates broad conclusions. Despite these challenges, all participants expressed gratitude for their inclusion in the project, reflecting overall positive sentiments regarding their experience. Feedback highlighted an equal split on the ease of operation, usefulness, and intent to use the technology for self-care and performance improvements, with 50% of respondents expressing a willingness to adopt the technology while the other half were uncertain. Overall, the immersive technology demonstrated promise for relaxation, stress relief, and mindfulness practices, with participants favorably comparing it to guided imagery techniques offered at the Natural Therapies Center. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Virtual Reality (VR) mindfulness technology has shown promising effects in uplifting the mood and overall well-being of healthcare professionals who often navigate high-stress environments (King et al., 2023). In this project, the focus was on evaluating the potential of VR mindfulness tools specifically tailored for Nursing Informaticists within a Biomedical department, a profession defined by its rigorous demands and stress-inducing nature. The results revealed high user satisfaction and noticeable enhancement of mental wellness; however, responses also highlighted disparities in user experience due to varying levels of comfort and ease of use. This underscores the necessity for refining the technology to align better with individual needs.VR mindfulness technology holds significant potential as a strategic tool to manage stress and foster mental resilience among healthcare professionals. Incorporating VR sessions into designated breaks could amplify the psychological benefits, creating a ripple effect on overall well-being and mental health outcomes (Soh et al., 2021).
