By Vanderbilt University. Nobel Prize winner Carl Wieman discusses science education rationale and methods. Resolution of global scale issues now require a more literate general populace. Cognitive psychology teaches us that retention from traditional lectures is very poor, because short term memory capacity is very small. Effective teaching actively engages learners to develop the long term memory that "experts" display. Factors in effective teaching include motivation, timely feedback, allowing students to find and fix their mistakes, and reflection on problem solving. Wieman demonstrates some interactive science simulations from the PhET site.
