Vanderbilt University News Service. Princine Lewis hosts. Carole Bartoo reports on the DNA research databank, BioVU, maintained by the Vanderbilt Medical Center. DNA samples from child patients, in the form of leftover blood samples, will soon begin to be collected. Cara Sutcliff, BioVU lab director, and Angel Wynes, mother of one child patient, speak. The "Lost in the Ivy" project of Rosevelt Nobel, a senior lecturer in sociology, who is documenting the experiences of Vanderbilt's earliest African American students is featured. Nobel and Vanderbilt alumni Perry Wallace and Eileen Carpenter speak, and Lewis acknowledges Bishop Joseph Johnson, Vanderbilt's first African American student, and Tommie Morton-Young, Peabody's first African American graduate. Lewis reports on Richard Hull, Vanderbilt alumnus and one of the executive producers of For Love of Liberty: The Story of America's Black Patriots, a documentary broadcast on PBS. Lewis reports on a humorous mention of Vanderbilt and its tough admission policies on Jon Stewart's Daily Show.
