James L. Wescoat, Jr.: "Water and Work in the Mughal Landscape"Thursday, April 5, at 4:10pm in Cohen 203
James L. Wescoat, Jr., is Aga Khan Professor in the Aga Khan Program for
Islamic Architecture at M.I.T. His research has concentrated on water
systems in South Asia and the US from the site to river basin scales. He
led the Smithsonian
Institution's project titled, "Garden, City, and Empire: The Historical
Geography of Mughal Lahore," which resulted in a co-edited volume on Mughal
Gardens: Sources, Places, Representations, Prospects, and The Mughal
Garden: Interpretation, Conservation, and Implications with colleagues from
the University of Engineering and Technology-Lahore.
More recently, he led an NSF-funded project on "Water and Poverty in Colorado." He is currently
conducting comparative research on international water problems. In 2003,
he published Water for Life: Water Management and Environmental Policy with
geographer Gilbert F. White (Cambridge University Press); and in 2007 he
co-edited Political Economies of Landscape Change: Places of Integrative
Power (Springer Publishing) for LAF Landscape Futures Initiative.

Oakland Institute) and Jeff Furman (Oakland Institute Board and Chair of
the Ben & Jerry's Corporate Board) present their research on
Vanderbilt’s investment in Africa
- Part 2 - Dan Apfel (Executive Director of the Responsible Endowments
Coalition) discusses how Vanderbilt University can move toward a more
responsible endowment structure like Columbia, Yale, Brown, and Duke

Call for Participants: Shade Grown
Wednesday, April 18, 5:00 pm Commons Dining Hall
Please join the Sustainability and Environmental Management Office (SEMO) as we celebrate Earth Day with Shade Grown,
a coffee house and open mic night showcasing creative performances
related to sustainability and the environment. SEMO will be partnering
with Vanderbilt Dining and the Vanderbilt Institute for Coffee Studies
to provide free shade grown coffee and cake. The event will take place
Wednesday, April 18 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm in the Commons Dining Hall,
please come out and join us! If you know of any students or staff who
would be interested in sharing poetry, spoken word, songs, stand-up
comedy, or other short performances related to sustainability and the
environment, please have them contact our office by emailing recycle@vanderbilt.edu or calling 3.2784. While
advance notice of intent to perform is not required, participants
giving advance notice will be given priority. Contributors are
encouraged to limit performances to 10 minutes or less. Consideration
will be given to longer works; however, advanced notification is
required.
