Development of Co-worker Observation Reporting System (CORS) – Implementation Toolkit for Nurses

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to create an evidence-based implementation toolkit for the Co-worker Observation Reporting System (CORS) for nursing. The CORS process was initially created to address physician disrespectful behavior through trained peer messenger feedback. Implementation for CORS in the provider realm includes a project bundle that consisted of 10 essential elements. The initial project bundle utilized in the provider realm was not evidence-based for use in the nursing realm. There was no standardized implementation process available for best practices in implementing CORS for nursing. The AIM was to develop and present a comprehensive, standardized, evidence-based framework to guide healthcare organizations through the successful implementation of CORS for Nursing to the CPPA. The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) Method was utilized to create the toolkit. This method was chosen for the structured approach allowing for a clear, step-by-step framework to plan and implement changes effectively, ensuring a systematic approach to the development of the toolkit. During the planning phase an extensive literature review was completed to include the results of an observational study of the initial implementation of CORS for nursing. Training on the CORS process was completed with the Center for Patient and Professional Advocacy (CPPA) staff. The do phase consisted of developing the initial draft of the toolkit using the literature review findings and training from CPPA. There was a focus group with the staff members of the for evaluation and usability of the toolkit. While in the study phase, the focus group suggestions were qualitatively analyzed, these findings were incorporated into the development of final the Toolkit. For the act phase, the Toolkit was delivered to CPPA for distribution to nursing leadership at institutions preparing for the implementation of CORS for nursing. The focus group discussion included CPPA staff members, Vanderbilt faculty advisors, and the project team. The CPPA staff members endorsed they had a product very similar to the toolkit created and proposed to incorporate and organize the toolkit using the four main categories as presented in FULD Framework for EBP Implementation. They also proposed addition of Gantt chart to enable task assignment and progress tracking; thus resulting in a complete revamping of the toolkit. The finished product is an evidence-based toolkit designed to provide a structured framework for institutions preparing to implement CORS for nursing. It establishes standardized procedures and protocols to promote consistency and guide the organization ensuring they have the requirements needed for the implementation for CORS for nursing. The Toolkit facilitates collaboration among team members, and when used with the attached Gantt spreadsheet, enables task assignment and progress tracking. In an easily accessible PDF, this final Toolkit was presented to the CPPA to adjust as needed per the organizational needs. The framework provides a structured approach to support organizations in adopting this important initiative. Future projects may include the formal evaluation of the Toolkit as an aid to implementing CORS for nursing.
