Abstract

Computational modeling of the Madaras wind turbine is presented in this thesis. First, comparative studies were performed based upon literature results to validate the accuracy of the computational model. Then, the Madaras turbine was modeled in 2-dimensions and later 3-dimensions to determine the lift characteristics generated as it spins. Systems consisting of two cylinders in different orientations – streamwise-separated and spanwise-separated were also studied in order to investigate interference between the cylinders. Lastly, a general FEA structural analysis was performed to create a starting point for future studies. The results from these studies confirm that a power plant consisting of Madaras turbines is feasible and would be competitive with more traditional wind power plants.
