Abstract
This thesis introduces BeatBlox, an innovative educational framework designed to teach computer science through music using NetsBlox, a block-based programming environment. As the demand for technical skills in the workforce continues to grow, there is an increasing need for accessible and engaging methods to introduce computing concepts to students. BeatBlox addresses this challenge by integrating music creation with block-based programming, leveraging the cognitive benefits of musical training to enhance learning outcomes in computer science.
The framework's key contributions include:
- A NetsBlox extension featuring specialized music blocks for efficient sound and melody creation.
- A SoundClips service providing access to over 500 pre-recorded sounds through Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs).
- Advanced capabilities such as audio effects, MIDI device integration, and audio import/export functions.
The effectiveness of BeatBlox was evaluated through focus groups with first-year university students and surveys among education professionals. These studies aimed to assess the framework's usability and potential for K-12 classroom integration.
By combining the universal appeal of music with fundamental programming concepts, BeatBlox offers a unique approach to computer science education. This framework has the potential to make programming more accessible and engaging for novice learners, addressing the perceived difficulty of acquiring programming skills and fostering creativity in the learning process.
